HAROLD PINTER’S
THE DWARFS
Adapted by KERRY LEE CRABBE
A Rehearsed Reading
Directed by
HARRY BURTON
Run At It Shouting presents a live online rehearsed reading of Harold Pinter’s The Dwarfs adapted by Kerry Lee Crabbe in aid of The NIA Project - a Hackney-based charity committed to delivering cutting edge service to end violence against women and children - taking place via Zoom on 25 September at 7pm. Harry Burton directs Charlie MacGechan (Mark), Stacy Martin (Virginia), Lewis Rainer (Pete) and Ossian Perret (Len).
Adapted from Harold Pinter’s only novel, The Dwarfs follows three old school friends, Mark, Pete and Len who knock about the streets, pubs and cafes of East London arguing the toss about art, life and love. The fourth member of their tight-knit group is Virginia, a young teacher. As autumn draws in, each of the friends finds their perception of one another and themselves irrevocably changed. Kerry Lee Crabbe’s adaptation of The Dwarfs was originally developed at the National Theatre Studio. It was screened on BBC Four in October 2002, receiving its stage première at the Tricycle Theatre in April 2003.
Before penning a play, Harold Pinter composed his only novel THE DWARFS in the dressing rooms of the rep theatres that employed him in his formative years as an actor. Pinter's own dramatic adaptation was produced in the West End in the early 60's. Then, in 2002, Kerry Lee Crabbe persuaded Pinter to collaborate on a new version, which was produced at the Tricycle Theatre. Set in the summer of 1950 on the mean streets of Hackney, THE DWARFS examines the mounting tensions amongst Pinter's brilliant but brittle Hackney Gang, as they brace themselves for adult life in post-war London. Bittersweet and funny, THE DWARFS is a riveting microcosm of the strange, compelling human landscape Pinter was to explore dramatically for the next 50 years.
