+ WORKSHOP FORMAT

From the Page to the Stage Narrative, Exposition, Subtext, Dialogue... In addition to his directing credits, Park Theatre Artistic Director Jez Bond has co-written numerous plays, been dramaturge on over a hundred and developed work with actors including Ian McKellen, Miriam Margolyes and Juliet Stevenson. This one-day workshop provides vital tools for actors – and indeed any theatre makers – in understanding, analysing and mounting text. Throughout the day you will engage in practical exercises, both individually and more often in subgroups. These are aimed at unlocking some of the key components of drama: from narrative structure to exposition to creating, and speaking, dialogue that ‘rings true’, and to discerning the power of the subtext. You’ll get to act, improvise and even write a scene – and, most importantly, have fun while doing it.

JEZ'S BIO

Jez Bond is the Founder and Artistic Director of Park Theatre. He graduated Hull University with a BA Honours in Drama and was later awarded the Channel Four Theatre Director Bursary. Directing at Park Theatre includes; Shakespeare, Tolkien & You (Ian McKellen’s one man show), the Whodunnit [Unrehearsed] series (involving a different celebrity guest each performance inc. Gillian Anderson, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Benedict Cumberbatch, Harry Hill, Damian Lewis, David Mitchell and Emma Thompson), the first ever English language production of the play La Cage aux Folles (translated by Simon Callow), Madame Rubinstein (starring Miriam Margolyes), Winner’s Curse (starring Clive Anderson), Building The Wall, Hurling Rubble at the Sun and Adult Supervision. Outside Park Theatre, credits include; Oliver! (starring Rowan Atkinson), I Have Been Here Before (Watford Palace Theatre), Sleeping Beauty (Salisbury Playhouse), Canaries Sometimes Sing (Kings Head & France), A Season in South Africa (Old Vic) plus tours of Austria, Switzerland and Hong Hong. Writing, and original scores, includes: the Whodunnit [Unrehearsed] series, Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty and Jack & the Beanstalk, all co-written with Mark Cameron. He has recently been commissioned to write a new comedy for the West End.

As a dramaturge he has developed a number of plays which have gone on to great success both in London and New York. In addition, having led the capital conversion of Park Theatre, Jez has been a consultant for a number of new build projects and guest speaker at various conferences around the world.

+ WORKSHOP FORMAT

Nail the scene and stand out in auditions; Understanding Storytelling and Screenplay Form.

Sending self-tapes into the void makes one wonder... ‘Am I good enough?’ And what does that mean? What kind of good? What makes one performance more ‘suitable’ than another? What is a ‘good choice’, by what rules is it judged and how do you make a ‘bold’ one? Often, the only way actors know how to measure the success of their performance is by the degree of realism. However, in screen auditions, the actor’s understanding of the scene and their contribution to the requirements of the storytelling are paramount. So... does your storytelling suck?

In this workshop, Linda & James will share the storytelling standard all film and TV adhere to and practically workshop and film scenes with you.

• Prior to the workshop, you will receive a screenplay scene and have a role allocated. • Early on, you will deliver a take as you would for a self-tape or audition. • From here, you will learn how to extract the essential conflict and storytelling from the scene and how to avoid being 'on the text' or ‘on the plot'. Armed with new theoretical knowledge of how a film/TV screenwriter constructs a screenplay to UK standards, you will... • ... do lots of acting and practically evolve your scene over the course of the day – and put increasingly more captivating, conflict-driven takes to camera.

Linda & James train screen acting from a storytelling point of view; how to satisfy the narrative, how to identify and hit all the beats, how to create tension etc., which will help you gain confidence in judging what to supply and will build the foundation for any successful screen audition.

Your scenes will be recorded with broadcast quality equipment. Upon request, you have the option to receive your footage after the session for no extra cost!

Using Commedia scenarios first published in 1611, Mark will bring newly written pages to the group each week, culminating in an in-house reading of a brand new full length comedy in week 4. This workshop will particularly appeal to actors looking to develop their skills in comedy, physical theatre and improvisation, as well as those who want to work on a new text by a leading playwright or who are interested in writing their own material.

We have confirmed The Wilton's Music Hall on the 9th & 10th of May where actors will showcase their work from Mark's workshop. This public rehearsed reading will showcase 10 of Mark's never-seen-before plays! Actors will be auditioned and chosen from Mark's workshops. As well as a terrific Spotlight credit, this is also a exciting project to be involved with! 🤩

The showcase is in aid of The NIA project (ending violence against women and children in the Hackney area). All our proceeds from the showcase will go to the given charity

Camera fairies

Do you have them? The name David has given to the apparently magic process the best actors have where they appear to be doing absolutely nothing to the eye, or even on a monitor on set, and yet when you see them in rushes, they are delivering a spellbinding performance. How?

With 35 years experience working with actors such as Timothy Spall, Jack O’Connell and Keeley Hawes, David has seen first hand how professional actors are able to engage an audience with captivating performances.

What makes an actor so compelling on screen? And how do you tell the truth whilst still keeping it ‘camera size’? In this practical workshop, David takes you through the technical aspects of acting for camera, how to prepare a scene, as well as harnessing the individual spark that makes an actor captivating to watch. The workshop will also explore the art of subtlety, how some actors say so much without doing anything at all, how to hone your uniqueness as a performer, and the techniques that encourage you to ’stop acting’ and live in the moment.

Your scenes will be recorded with broadcast quality equipment. Upon request, you have the option to receive your footage after the session for no extra cost!

WEEK ONE (12 OCTOBER / 10:30 - 13:30 GMT )

Small roles – During the first week, actors will be given 2 scenes in which they will read for the small roles. The objective will be to get actors used to delivering their lines in a way that fits the purpose of the scene and not over emphasise or draw much attention during the scene.

WEEK TWO (19 OCTOBER / 10:30 - 13:30 GMT )

+ WORKSHOP FORMAT

“We all have unconscious mechanisms that limit the range of emotions we feel safe expressing and their intensity. For actors these limits can negatively impact their performances, often requiring them to substitute phony ‘indicating’ for genuine ‘experiencing’. My forty-year study of body-psychotherapy has revealed that fortunately, for us and our audiences, remedial tools exist.” Jon East

In this workshop combining a little theory and a lot of practice, BAFTA winning director Jon East (Killing Eve, Downton Abbey, The Last Kingdom, Lost in Space etc) and his wife Jay East (psychotherapist & former state registered nurse) will focus constructively on the difficulties and challenges involved in emotionally truthful acting that are presented by an individual’s ‘character armour’, (ie their habitual and unconscious defence structure).

On DAY 1, Jon & Jay will briefly fill in the workshop’s conceptual background and then lead participants in a series of enjoyably playful physical and verbal exercises, specially adapted by them from several modalities of body-psychotherapy. These are designed to create awareness of any limiting blockages to emotional expression and begin to loosen them, and by so doing introduce a pathway to further personal & professional growth.

On DAY 2, after a warm up, Jon will direct the participants on camera, (in groups of three), in scenes that they’ll have received in advance, replicating the on-set experience and with Jay’s help giving them a chance to explore putting the previous day’s ‘body-mind’ learnings into practice. Q&A sessions ending each day will provide an opportunity to address any outstanding issues. (Filmed scenes from Day 2 will be made available after the workshop to its participants).

Upon request, you have the option to receive your footage after the session for no extra cost!

JON & JAY'S BIO

Jon East - “I’m a BAFTA winning DGA director with over 40 years’ experience in the international film & television industry in various roles, including running actor & director workshops for the BBC and universities across the UK. I’ve worked across many genres and directed actors at all levels of experience, from Oscar, Emmy & Golden Globe winners to young children experiencing their first me in front of a professional camera crew.

I started making films in 1972, when I was ten years old, and training at the West Surrey College of Art & Design, (now the University of Creative Arts), I started in the industry as a storyboard & concept artist on music promos & commercials. I went on to work as a BBC film editor and later as the Chief Storyline Writer & producer/director on EastEnders. Between 2005 and 2009 I ran the BBC Children's Drama & Animation Department, during which time I also directed and/or executive produced several award-winning programs. For direction, I’ve been BAFTA nominated twice and I won the award for single film That Summer Day, (about the July 2005 London terrorist bombings). More recently I’ve been involved with HETV shows like Downton Abbey, Lost in Space, Surface, Killing Eve, Pennyworth and The Last Kingdom, for companies such as BBC America, Netflix, Warner Bros, Apple, HBO etc.

I was also nominated at the Venice Biennale with my independent film It Can Be Done. This short was an opportunity to tell a part of the true story of Dr Wilhelm Reich (1897-1957), the grandfather of body-psychotherapy, whose understanding of and work on emotional blocks I’ve studied since the early 1980s, (both theoretically & experientially, one-on-one and in groups). These learnings will form part of the foundation for our workshop.”

Jay East - “I am a UKCP Registered Psychotherapist who has been working therapeutically with clients - individually, in couples and in groups - since 2004. My practice is also informed by my background in the NHS as a State Registered Nurse (before entering the psychotherapeutic field) and my other professional & personal life experiences, such as performing as a singer/musician, (eg at Edinburgh Festival etc). Transactional Analysis (TA) provides the foundation of my psychotherapeutic and group work. TA was developed by Eric Berne in the 1950s and is a widely recognised form of modern humanistic psychology. TA’s uncomplicated language, concepts and behavioural tools provide valuable insights that are easily grasped by all. From my own journey and experiences as a therapist I’ve found TA to be an incredibly effective way to support clients. It helps them work with their issues and develop a deeper understanding of their complexities and their relationships, (both with themselves and others). It also offers an understanding of the wider picture of human interactions.

I work in a holistic, creative and eclectic fashion; incorporating when appropriate insights and supportive processes from my many body-psychotherapy trainings over the years, (including my particular interest in Charles ‘Chuck’ Kelley’s Radix: Education in Feeling & Purpose). It is those that I shall mostly be bringing to bear in our workshop.”

THE COMIC ACTOR

Mark Ravenhill is a playwright and theatre maker. He has been an Associate Artist of the National Theatre and Playwright in Residence for the Royal Shakespeare Company. He is currently a trustee of the Royal Court Theatre.

Actors who have appeared in the premieres of Mark's plays include: Ian McKellen, Lesley Manville, Juliet Stevenson, Matt Smith, Andrew Garfield, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jimmy Akingbola and Nicola Walker.

In this workshop, we'll use mask work, clowning and improvisation to unleash each actor's comic potential. A safe space in which to play, explore and laugh through a series of practical on your feet exercises.

We have confirmed The Wilton Music Hall on the 9th & 10th of May where actors will showcase their work from Mark's workshop. This public rehearsed reading will showcase 8 of Mark's never-seen-before plays! Actors will be auditioned and chosen from Mark's workshops. As well as a terrific Spotlight credit, this is also a exciting project to be involved with! 🤩

+ WORKSHOP FORMAT

The purpose of the one day workshop is to play with and explore performance choices in a selection of scenes from TV drama. Working closely with Fergus, participants will look at how to interrogate each scene as written in order to best realise the writer’s intention and best serve the story.

In addition, the workshop will explore other ways to add value and story to the scene, through blocking and being conscious of one’s interaction with other performers in the scene. There will be discussion and Q&A time at the end of the day.

Your scenes will be recorded with broadcast quality equipment. Upon request, you have the option to receive your footage after the session for no extra cost!

FERGUS'S BIO

Fergus had a 20-year background in documentary as a producer/director and executive producer at BBC Studios before making the move to drama. In the documentary genre he was twice nominated for a BAFTA and won a Royal Television Society (RTS) award for his series STEPHEN FRY:OUT THERE (BBC).

He began directing drama in 2017 with his film AGAINST THE LAW which he developed from the book of the same name and then collaborated with writer Brian Fillis to bring to screen. The 70-minute film blends drama with moments of documentary testimony from gay men who spoke personally on the themes of persecution addressed in the drama. The film was nominated for two BAFTA awards for Best Single Drama and Best Cinematography.

Fergus’s second film, MOTHER’S DAY, was based on his extensive research and interviews with the real-life characters at the heart of the drama. The single drama was nominated for an RTS Best Drama award and won the BANFF Best TV Movie Award.

Recognising that the next obvious step in his career would be to direct a primetime TV drama, Fergus landed Lead Director on season 3 of THE A WORD (BBC/Keshet/Sundance) written by Peter Bowker. His work on this attracted the attention of writer and showrunner, Sally Wainwright, who invited Fergus to direct the concluding 3 episodes of GENTLEMAN JACK (S2) (BBC/HBO). So impressed with Fergus’s storytelling, Wainwright then invited him to direct the final ever episodes of her hit show HAPPY VALLEY (S3) (BBC/AMC). His episodes were the most watched of all UK drama in 2023. To date, the show has won the National TV Award (NTA) for Best Drama Series, several RTS awards including Best Series, and the Rose D’or for Best Performance of the Year by Sarah Lancashire.

Fergus has just completed work as Lead Director on THE TOURIST (S2) for BBC1 in the UK, Stan in Australia and Netflix for the US market.

JOELLE'S BIO

I was born and raised in East London; growing up in between the boroughs of Newham and Barking & Dagenham specifically. I always had a passion for storytelling, but I had no idea how to gain access to the TV and film industry or that there were even jobs for me within it.

While I was working as a production assistant, I began creating short documentaries. I saved my money and bought a DSLR camera, learned how to shoot and began documenting local people, which became a short series called Hidden Talent, which featured on BBC3. This then led to my being commissioned by BBC3 to create a short poetic documentary about how regeneration affects young people in the Gascoigne Estate in Barking called Losing My Home in The Name of Regeneration(2019).

After making several short documentaries and films, I used my experience to start Bluebird Pictures, to focus on more narrative storytelling plus deliver outreach programmes in my local community.

I released our first narrative short film; Greasy Spoon, a comedy-sci-fi about gentrification, in 2021. It was selected for BAFTA-qualifying festivals such as Aesthetica and London Short Film Festival and was nominated for the Hijack Visionary Award and the Taash Comedy in Film Award. This was the film that I felt best reflected my voice as a director, and it was the job that helped land me my agent, Independent Talent, allowing me to become a filmmaker full-time.

Since 2021, I have directed a read-through of Sarah Keyworth‘s comedy Manbeast, directed the non-TX pilot Great Brittons (written by Ava Pickett) for Channel 4, directed two episodes of Dreaming Whilst Black, become the lead director of Channel 4’s Queenie, and written a pilot for Audible.
