+ WORKSHOP FORMAT

At the end of the course, actors will be given a reel of their filmed performances, showcasing their development throughout the intensive.

WEEK ONE (12 OCTOBER / 10:30 - 13:30 GMT )

Small roles – During the first week, actors will be given 2 scenes in which they will read for the small roles. The objective will be to get actors used to delivering their lines in a way that fits the purpose of the scene and not over emphasise or draw much attention during the scene.

WEEK TWO (19 OCTOBER / 10:30 - 13:30 GMT )

Supporting lead / lead roles - This week we will focus on lead or supporting lead roles. Actors will be given a scene with more dialogue and an arc. This will be an opportunity for actors to show me what they’re capable of and receive feedback to iron out any bad audition habits.

WEEK THREE (26 OCTOBER / 10:30 - 13:30 GMT )

Recall – Following on from week two, actors will be given a recall scene for the same role that we worked on during week two. The additional scene will be provided, and more context given around the scenes and project. This will give actors more material to work with and we will engage in discussion regarding character and script as well as putting the new scene on tape.

WEEK FOUR (2 NOVEMBER / 10:30 - 13:30 GMT )

Chemistry reads – This week will be chemistry reads. Actors will work in pairs and read a scene together. This week will show actors how chemistry reads work and give them an opportunity to work collaboratively with another actor during the workshop.

#038 - CELEBRATION | 'WORKING WITH PINTER' HOSTED BY HARRY BURTON

Harry Burton & Harold Pinter

Harry Burton & Harold Pinter

#038 - CELEBRATION

Tonight on 'Working With Pinter' we will be focussing entirely on Pinter's last play CELEBRATION, his funniest and also perhaps his most accessible script in many years. Set in a West End restaurant, arms dealers, bankers and a bizarre time-travelling waiter exchange surreal tales over the Osso Bucco and Valpollicella. Not only will we read the script, we will also watch the film of Harold Pinter's own premiere production, with Lindsay Duncan, Keith Allen, Indira Varma and a very cheeky young newcomer called Danny Dyer.

Harry Burton & Harold Pinter

Harry Burton & Harold Pinter

#037 - NO MANS LAND - PART 2

This week in our exploration of Harold Pinter's plays we go further out into NO MAN'S LAND. Perhaps with this play Pinter was aiming to emulate Beckett's comfortless courage. But the laughs come thick and fast, as well as the startling plunges into cold despair. Joining us is Alex Lass, Associate Director on Sean Mathias's production which starred Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart. Also a team of distinguished Pinter scholars, and the one and only Henry Woolf, last-man-standing from the original Hackney Gang. Pay-what-you-can and join our thriving community!

#036 - NO MANS LAND | 'WORKING WITH PINTER' HOSTED BY HARRY BURTON

Harry Burton & Harold Pinter

Harry Burton & Harold Pinter

#036 - NO MANS LAND

Harold Pinter sometimes heard voices in his head. By listening intently to what the voices said, his plays took their form. One such play is NO MAN'S LAND: "I was in the back of a taxi, and a line came into my head, someone was pouring drink into a glass and asking another man: "As it is?" This line remained with, as did the second line: 'Yes absolutely, absolutely as it is.' In other words, neat Scotch. I got out of the taxi and got home and I went upstairs and started to write what followed...' Join Harry Burton on this week's Working With Pinter Zoom as we read and discuss Pinter's masterpiece NO MAN'S LAND. Pay-What-You-Can!

Harry Burton & Harold Pinter

#035 - ONE FOR THE ROAD

This Friday at 7.00pm we’re going to charge our glasses, brace ourselves and toast Harold’s ice cold masterpiece of horror, “One For The Road” . Written (unsurprisingly) in 1984, the play was originally produced at the Lyric Theatre Hammersmith with Alan Bates. In 2001 the play was revived in New York & London by director Robin Lefevre, with Harold himself taking the role of the Torturer-in-Chief, Nicholas. Co-starring were Indira Varma and Lloyd Hutchinson, and on Friday Lloyd Hutchinson will join us to share his memories of working with Harold!

#032
THE HOMECOMING - PART 5

Several firsts this Friday on the Working With Pinter Zoom.

For one thing we’ve never had a Part 5 before, but THE HOMECOMING seems to warrant it.

Furthermore we’ve never invited several scholars to come on together — until now.

On Friday, sharing their deep dives into the mythic hinterland of THE HOMECOMING, we’re very excited to welcome Katherine Burkman (“The Dramatic World of Harold Pinter", “Harold Pinter: All In The Family” and more), and Ann C Hall (current editor of the essential Pinter Review). They will lead our discussion and take questions.

We should have time for a couple of HOMECOMING rehearsals too!

#031 - The Homecoming - Part 4

This Friday we look at "The Homecoming" from the performer's point of view. RUTH is one of Harold Pinter's most compelling and disturbing female characters. Her uncompromising independence and ruthless cunning still challenge us. In 2006 Eve Best played RUTH on Broadway, opposite Ian MacShane as MAX. Eve joins Harry, Henry Woolf and the Grid to share her experiences of playing RUTH, and her memories of being deep inside the world of the play.

#030 - The Homecoming - Part 3

Maybe the greatest challenge and joy of working with a Harold Pinter play is the process through rehearsal of listening to the language, the rhythms and the silences for clues as to what's going on down in depths. "The Homecoming" is a erupting volcano of a play, and this week we will lower ourselves into the crater, discuss and rehearse some scenes, and get to grips with what's really happening.

#029 - The Homecoming - Part 2

Is Harold Pinter a misogynist or a feminist? Is his masterpiece THE HOMECOMING beyond the politically-correct pail, or way ahead of the curve? Still one of the most disgracefully, deliciously funny plays of the last hundred years or so, join us on Zoom this Friday at 7pm to unravel THE HOMECOMING. We'll be joined by Henry Woolf, Harold Pinter's greatest friend and collaborator, last-man-standing of the original Hackney gang.

Our popular weekly pay-what-you-can WORKING WITH PINTER workshops are hosted on Zoom by West End director Harry Burton, close associate of Harold Pinter, and director of Channel 4’s WORKING WITH PINTER (on registration you will receive a link to this film). Harry’s guests on the Pinter Zoom have included Henry Woolf (Pinter’s oldest friend), actor Douglas Hodge, DAREDEVIL star Charlie Cox (who co-starred with Tom Hiddleston in BETRAYAL), academic & author George Cole, and dramatist Kerry Lee Crabbe. #002 ANTON CHEKHOV'S UNCLE VANYA WITH SIMON FURNESS

Anton Chekhov

Anton Chekhov

Episode
#002

Start the New Year off with a dose of Chekhov's UNCLE VANYA. This is the beginnings of a weekly pay-what-you-can Zoom workshop with Simon Furness. Together we will discuss, analyse, rehearse and play!

  • Discussion: Spines/Super-objectives for all the characters collectively and individually. Keep it simple (ie a single statement for each character: eg to 'improve things for himself'). Reading the play a lot will help with this.

  • Scene Study: Astrov and Yelena.

  • (Time permitting) Analysis: Act 1 (beginning)
