SHAKESPEARE INTENSIVE.
Technique is not a prison, it’s the road to freedom.
A specialist course examining Shakespeare’s direction to his actors through his use of language. When Shakespeare’s company was performing there was little rehearsal, no director, and his actors received their scripts with just cues and their own speeches. Through his use of verse, prose, cues, pause, monosyllabic or elaborate language he showed his actors status, character, pace, and the emotional traffic of the scene. There are rules when it comes to playing Shakespeare. It’s fine to break them, but first you need to know what they are! When you understand the structure of a scene you will hear what Shakespeare is asking his actors to do.
Participants will be asked to prepare and record a short scene for the first session. Scenes will then be cast, and rehearsal will start in session 2. Workshops will run on Saturday afternoons between 3-5. Maximum number of participants 10.
WORKSHOP FORMAT
We will analyse the text, apply the rules, and discover the freedom that comes when you are in control of the text. Through rehearsal and discussion we will discover character and context and develop a skill set that will allow you to approach any text from the classics to commercial copy!
The final session will be a performance that is recorded, and you can request a copy if you wish.
