Laurence introduced Florian to the English speaking world.
He was the first director to present his work in the UK - commissioning translations of - The Father and The Mother from Christopher Hampton which he then launched at the Ustinov Studio and subsequently in the West End.
The Father has become a theatrical sensation - winning multiple major awards world wide.and has been made into a film staring Anthony Hopkins - for which Hopkins won the Oscar for Best Actor and Zeller and Hampton won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screen play.
LAURENCE WORKED CLOSELY WITH FLORIAN ON THE PRESENTATION OF THIS PLAY - FLORIAN IS ONE OF EUROPE’S MOST ORIGINAL STORYTELLERS
IN THIS WORKSHOP YOU WILL LEARN TO INHABIT FLORIAN’S RICH AND SUBTLE CHARACTERS AND YOU WILL GIVEN THE TOOLS TO DISCOVER THE PRECISE ACTIONS AND OBJECTIVES THAT GIVE THESE CHARACTERS LIFE.
THERE WILL BE A PERFORMANCE IN WEEK SIX TO SHOWCASE THIS WORK IN PROGRESS.
WEEK ONE: Creating a character.
We will learn to create - character list’s - an invaluable technique which will provide you with the skills to locate the clues in any the text for the building of character.
WEEK TWO: Ensemble character work.
Working together armed with our lists we will hot seat each character and get a sense of the complexity of these people, their unique journey and the complexity of their relationships.
WEEK THREE: Impulse to action.
In this session you will learn how to break down a scene into it’s vital component’s and discover the objectives and actions which power the units and give the characters their driving force.
WEEK FOUR: Testing our objectives.
Working through key scenes of the play you will learn how to test and adjust your objectives - and experience how it feels to be these characters in action.
WEEK FIVE: Scene Study
Having got a sense of the habitual objectives of your character you will learn about - Super Objective - an invaluable tool for containing and powering the life of your character.
WEEK SIX: Showcase
The group will perform the entire play together and your performance will be recorded on film.
BIO
Director Laurence Boswell is one of the UK’s leading theatre directors.
His first job was as Assistant Director at the Royal Shakespeare Company and in that time he worked closely with Cis Berry and John Barton on speaking Shakespeare’s verse. He has subsequently worked for the company as a freelance director - an Associate Director - he is an RSC Associate Artist.
